Dale Nelson went on a killing spree in September 1970, after a serious drinking binge created in him an uncontrollable rage. He first visited his distant relative, Shirley Wasyk’s house in British Colombia, Canada, killing her and one her her children and raping another. Nelson then drove to the Phipps’ family home, killing Ray and Isabelle and three of their four children, then abducted their eight-year-old daughter Cathy; the following day her body was found horribly mutilated. Nelson was caught sleeping off the effects of the alcohol. He was found guilty of all eight murders and was sentenced to life imprisonment in April 1971. The sheer violence, particularly in the Wasyk’s house, shocked the Canadian community near the US boarder. It was said that after killing Tracy Wasyk, Nelson cut her stomach open and ate her organs.

Paul John Knowles was already on parole for burglary when he was picked up by police in Jacksonville, Florida in July 1974, on suspicion of murder. He escaped from his police cell, however, and that same evening he robbed and murdered Alice Curtis. During the next four months he drove all over America, killing at least 17 others. His method was to approach a house and threaten the occupants with a gun, then rape, rob and kill his victims, two of whom were young children. Knowles was eventually caught whilst trying to drive through a police roadblock, but on 18 November he was shot dead by an FBI agent when he tried to seize the sheriff’s pistol during an escape attempt. It may never be known how many people fell victim to Knowles’ attacks.

Nicolas Cocaign was sentenced to thirty years in prison for stabbing and strangling his cellmate to death, cutting him open with a razor, ripping out one of his lungs-which he claimed he mistook for his heart-and cooking it with a makeshift stove and eating it. Prior to the murder, Cocaign pled with the prison officials to put him in insolation due to his violent nature.
